It’s that time again! Want to help your students improve their language skills over the summer? Here are some recommendations from the Duolingo for Schools team, along with attached resources for easy implementation:
- Speak candidly about “the why.”
Talk to your students about why learning a language might matter to them. What doors would it open for their futures? Work with them to co-create a vision board of what could happen when they raise their proficiency in the language you teach them. - Conference with students to develop goals.
Meet with your students in quick, individual check-ins to discuss their present performance and what they’d like to achieve. Help them develop a total XP goal for the summer with their potentially increased availability in mind. - Determine low-lift action steps for success.
Help your students commit to clear, manageable steps to get them toward their goals. We recommend adjusting their daily Duolingo XP goal to help keep them in line toward their final objective. Assist them in weighing potential barriers to success alongside the additional time that summer provides. - Work with students to list additional practice options.
So, they completed their daily Duolingo. Now what? Consider options for engaging in projects and activities that give them the opportunity to apply what they’ve learned. Encourage them to polish their skills using these tips to sharpen their language skills. - Celebrate students’ hard work when school returns!
Ensure that students know how to track the hard work that they are doing, and that there is a way for them to return those notes to you. Consider brainstorming a way to surprise your students by celebrating their hard work the next time you are together!
